Annual General Meeting of the Asiatic Society and Awarding Ceremony to the Greek Shipowner and Benefactor Mr Tsakos by its Honorary Patron H.I.H Princess Takamado, 29 January 2005.

 

This year’ s General Meeting of the Asiatic Society took place on the 21st January at the OAG House. The meeting was graced by the Honorary Patron of the Asiatic Society, H.I.H Princess Takamado and was also attended by its former President and   Ambassador of Greece to Japan Dr G.Sioris, accompanied by the Asiatic Society s new benefactor Captain P.Tsakos. The latter was presented a certificate of appreciation by H.I.H Princess Takamado, as a token of gratitude for his offer to sponsor the annual publication of the “Transactions” of the Asiatic Society.

 Mr P.Tsakos is one of the most important Greek shipowners, well-known in Japan, where he has been doing business over the last forty years. He is also reputed for his generous contributions to cultural and educational projects around the world.

In addition to the introductory remarks about Captain Tsakos by the Society’ s current President Dr Wilkinson and Dr Sioris and Captain Tsakos’ moving response, the event included the usual annual briefing about the Society’ s activities, a very interesting lecture on “Tokugawa Japan (1603-1868)” by T.Tokugawa, the 18th Head of the Tokugawa family, followed by a reception.

Distinguished guests, who attended the Annual Meeting of the Asiatic Society, included members of the Diplomatic Corps, the academic community and other distinguished members of the Japanese Society.
